DRY ICE BLASTING SERVICES

General Abrasives Co. Inc. provides a variety of dry ice cleaning services; a valuable alternative to sandblasting or abrasive cleaning methods for many products. This service is similar in concept to both power washing and dry abrasive blasting but only in that both methods clean a surface and/or remove paint and surface contaminants.

Superior to other cleaning methods, dry ice blasting provides the ability to clean without introducing abrasive media into the cleaning process. A completely dry process, dry ice blasting can:

  • Reduce cleaning time up to 90%

  • Reduce labor costs up to 80%

  • Allows to clean machines while energized and operational

  • Prevent product damage with non-abrasive dry ice

  • Eliminate the use of chemicals and reduce waste disposal costs

Power washing uses water and often detergents or cleaning chemicals that create potentially contaminated runoff, leaves cleaned surfaces wet, and is not suitable for most indoor use. Dry abrasive blasting creates a massive dust plume, leaves blast grit on the cleaned surface, heat generated on the product surface can possibly lead to warping, and it is not suitable for most indoor use.

DRY ICE BLASTING ADVANTAGES

Used within a wide range of applications, dry ice blasting greatly reduces the chance for damage during the cleaning process, while also decreasing the downtime of production equipment being taken out of service for routine cleanings. Removing an array of contaminants without the use of abrasives, dry ice blasting allows you to clean many surfaces without profiling or altering the appearance and texture of the product.

Because the system does not introduce water or chemicals, dry ice blasting can also be used indoors. One of the biggest advantages to dry ice blasting is the elimination of toxic chemicals within the cleaning process, reducing both the damage to the environment and to the overall health of your employees, customers, and contractors.

General Abrasives provides dry ice blasting services across several industries, meeting guidelines set forth by USDA, FDA, and EPA. Applications include:

  • Automotive

  • Coatings and Corrosion Removal

  • Fire and Flood Restoration
  • Food Preparation

  • Heavy Equipment

  • Marine

  • Oil and Gas

  • Packaging and Printing

  • Paint & Graffiti Removal

HOW IT WORKS

Using pressure blasted particles of solid carbon dioxide (commonly called dry ice), instead of using small, abrasive particles for blasting, dry ice blasting uses a pressurized stream of dry ice pellets that are initially solid and begin to sublimate – instantaneously turn to gas upon impact.

Surface coatings like paint oil, adhesives, and accumulated debris shrink from the change in temperatures and are forcibly blown off the surfaces they are attached to, leaving a clean, dry substrate. This is especially effective in environments where pollution and dust are detrimental to the system’s operation.

DRY ICE BLASTING APPLICATIONS

Dry ice blasting, in addition to being a non-abrasive and non-destructive cleaning method, is also a faster and more cost-effective alternative to traditional cleaning. By eliminating abrasive media, as well as liquid cleaning solutions, dry ice cleaning is safe for equipment and electrical applications. Used for adhesive, coatings, and corrosion removal, tool cleaning and parts refinishing, surface preparation and remediation, dry ice blasting provides a versatile cleaning solution that will not damage sensitive or delicate surfaces or surrounding areas while being aggressive enough to meet industrial process cleanliness standards.

The versatility provided by dry ice blasting can be incorporated into both general cleaning applications as well as specialized remediation and heavy-duty cleaning services, with key benefits that include:

  • Non-abrasive, non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-conductive

  • Environmentally Friendly, with no run-off or other contaminants

  • Allows for items to be cleaned in place without the need for disassembly

  • Approved for use in the food industry

  • Variable PSI (ranging from 60 to 250) blast stream to adapt to a variety of substrates

  • Provides gentle cleaning for smoke remediation from paper, wood, upholstery and more

  • Offers rigorous cleaning of welding debris from tools and machinery, baked on cooking grease, and more
